Assembly Guide: Clothes Rails

This guide covers all aspects of assembly for products in our Heavy Duty Clothes Rails range:

  • Heavy Duty Rails (See featured image)
  • Reinforced Rails - Similar to Heavy Duty Rails but with extra reinforcing leg struts
  • Extra Tall Rails - Heavy Duty Rails with height extensions
  • 2 Tier or 'Double' Rails - Heavy Duty Rails with height extensions and centre bars
  • Children's Clothes Rails - Smaller versions of Heavy Duty Rails

Wheels/Castors: Your product will either come with our standard, or heavy duty castors. The fitting for each is slightly different, so check which type you have against the key below for the correct fitting instruction.

Construction: All Heavy Duty Clothes Rails are not constructed the same, depending upon the width of your unit the number of pieces might be 'Tension Fitted' or 'Compact', see the construction diagrams below to ascertain which type you have.

Specific Pieces: Some models come with additional pieces like Reinforcing Struts, Wire Shelves, Heavy Duty Wheels and Parallel Rail Brackets. Check the model specific instruction below for how to fit these parts.

Important: Do not attempt to assemble the Rail or Castors without reading these instructions fully.

Important Note For The Compact (5-6ft) 2-Tier Rail: The Centre Rail MUST be installed first before attaching the height extensions. See below for full instructions.

Centre Bars & Height Extensions: For troubleshooting and information, including assembly, please view our How to Use Centre Bars & Height Extensions guide.

General Clothes Rails Construction

The component parts and construction of your Clothes Rail depends upon the width, height, colour and style that you purchased, these are the main types, note that some have additional parts like support struts and shelves that are not shown in these diagrams, they can be found in the general assembly instructions later on in this guide.

General Assembly Instructions

Once you've identified which of the construction types your Clothes Rail is, then follow these general steps to put the main parts of the rail together following the respective layout shown above.

1. Attaching the Legs to the Base Bar(s)

Connect the square ends into the square leg poles as shown. Make sure that the push pins are lined up and 'click' into the corresponding fixing holes.

2. Connecting the Base Bars (if in two sections)

If your model has 2 Base Bars then they need to be connected together before attaching to the legs. Make sure the push pins are lined up and click into the corresponding fixing holes.

3. Connecting Uprights/Extensions to the Base Bar

Following the correct construction type shown above, connect the Uprights and/or Extensions (if you have some), lining up the push pins so they 'click' into the corresponding fixing holes.

To complete your rail and identify any other initial steps, use the appropriate instructions below.

Completing the 'Tension Fitted' Models (Single Top Rail)

This is the standard layout for Clothes Rails, the Top Rail is one single piece and holds the unit under tension. These instructions also relate to the Extra Tall Clothes Rails - the Extensions slot into the top of the Uprights as seen in the Construction type diagram for your model.

'Tension Fitted' models - the Uprights won't be straight

Once the base and uprights are assembled, you will find that the uprights are not straight up vertical. This is normal for models with a single Top Rail as they are tension fitted. If you have Extensions, add them in to the top of the Uprights now.

Push-fit the Top Rail into one of the Uprights

Push one end of the Top Rail into one of the Uprights (or Extensions) and push down as far as it will go.

Pull the second Upright inwards and push Top Rail on

Pull the other Upright inwards until you can push the other end of the Top Rail down on to it to complete the rail.

Completing the 'Compact' Models (Split Top Rail)

The 'Compact' style is called this because the sections are shorter than the standard style which means they are easier to store collapsed, without any compromise on strength. Note: the word 'Compact' may not appear in the product name, for reference: Compact models are only available in 5ft or 6ft rails. The 2ft, 3ft & 4ft rails are always the standard style.

Connecting the Base & Uprights separately

The 'Compact' models fit together differently to the standard style. Once you have attached the Legs, Uprights and Base Bars together you should have two assemblies like this.

Connecting the Top Rail into the Uprights

The Uprights in the 'Compact' models have part of the top rail already attached to them, and you will have received a Centre Rail piece which is connected to the uprights as above.

Connecting the Base Bars to finish the Rail

Once the Top Rail is complete you should be able to slot the two Base Bars together. Make sure the push pins are lined up and click into the corresponding fixing holes.

Completing the 'Reinforced' Rails

Fitting the Reinforcing Leg Struts

After following the general instructions and the appropriate Top Rail fittting, add the Reinforcing Leg Struts. They fit neatly between the legs of the Clothes Rail and the two screws are tightened to fit in place. This can be done before or after general assembly.

Completing the Rail with Shelves

Fit the 'Y' Bracket and Top Wire Shelf

The 'Y' shaped brackets must be put on to the Uprights before the Top Rail, once the Top Rail is added slide the bracket up to meet it and tighten the fixing screws by hand very tightly. The Wire Shelf slots into the two holes, so make sure they face inside when adding the brackets.

Fit the Bottom Shelf Bracket and Wire Shelf

The Bottom Shelf fits into a special bracket that has two holes. The bracket must be fitted before the Wheels, and is screwed in place. Then fit the shelf into the slots and tighten the wing nuts.

Fitting the Standard Castors/Wheels

NOTE: For the model with Top and Bottom Shelf, you must add the Bottom Shelf Brackets before adding the Castors/Wheels - see further up the page.

Types of Castors/Wheels

Most of our Clothes Rails come with the standard black castors/wheels shown below, but if you have the Heavy Duty Wheels then instead refer to This Guide.

Step 1

IMPORTANT: If you attach the grommet to the wheels before pushing into the legs, you will not be able to fit the wheels properly. You may want to use a rubber mallet to knock them in.

Step 2

The Castors should click-lock into the Grommets and be able to swivel. Repeat for all four Castor Wheels.

Completing the 'Two Tier' Rail Models

These Clothes Rails have an additional Centre Rail, and because of the additional height needed for the Centre Rail, they always come with Extension Poles too. Note: the Centre Rail must be fitted before the Top Rail in all cases, following the construction type of your model.

Positioning the Centre Rail

The Centre Rail fits on to the Uprights and there is no precise position for the Rail, it can be located wherever you need it. Your Centre Rail might be one or two pieces.

Tightening the Centre Rail

There is a tightening screw on each end of the Centre Rail which you should only tighten once in the final position. Tighten by hand until it won't turn any further.

Fitting the Extensions and Top Rail

Depending upon the construction type of your model, your Extensions might fit above or below the main Uprights, then the Top Rail should be fitted as per the instructions above.

Completing the 'Parallel' Rail Models

This model has two parallel Top Rails that fit on to special Parallel Rail Brackets. Begin the assembly using the general instructions above.

Fit the double parallel rail brackets to the Uprights

The brackets slot on to the top of the Uprights. Do not tighten the fixing screws until both Top Rails are in place.

Fit the Top Rails on to the brackets

The Parallel model is tension fitted, so you will need to pull the Uprights together and fit each of the Top Rails on to the Parallel Rail Brackets, pushing each end of the rails on as far as they go.

Fit the double parallel rail brackets to the Uprights

Finally, tighten the fixing screws by hand as tight as you can without using excessive force. The two parallel rails should be aligned to one another and the unit symmetrical.
